Chateaubriand Fellowship Program (2024-2025)

The Chateaubriand Fellowship is a grant offered by the Embassy of France in the United States. It supports outstanding PhD students from U.S. institutions who wish to conduct part of their doctoral research in France for a period ranging from 4 to 8/9 months. Chateaubriand fellows are selected through a merit-based competition, with expert evaluation in France and in the United States.

 

The Fellowship is divided into two subprograms:

 

Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Biology-Health (STEM) 

 The Chateaubriand Fellowship in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Biology-Health (STEM) for doctoral students aims to initiate or reinforce collaborations, partnerships or joint projects between French and American research teams. This fellowship is offered by the Office for Science & Technology (OST) of the Embassy of France in partnership with American universities and French research organizations such as Inserm and Inria. It is a partner of the National Science Foundation’s GROW program .

Application Deadline: January 19, 2024 at 12:00pm (noon) EST.
Eligibility: Must be currently 
working on your PhD, must be registered in an American university, all STEM and Health research topics are eligible. See all eligibility & guidelines here
Benefits: Monthly allowance (up to 1750 euros/month), round trip ticket to France, support for health insurance abroad.

Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS)

 

The Chateaubriand Fellowship in Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) is offered by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy. The HSS program targets outstanding PhD students enrolled in U.S. institutions who seek to engage in research in France in any discipline of the Humanities and Social Sciences. The HSS Chateaubriand program is supported by Campus France which provides assistance to fellows on site.

Benefits: Monthly stipend of 1750 euros, round trip ticket to France, health insurance for the duration of the fellowship.
